How to Figure Out Your EER

Filed under: Uncategorized

A fast and accurate way to figure out your EER is to use the equations below. To use this method to figure out your EER, you will first want to convert your weight to kilograms and your height to meters.

Conversions:

Pounds / 2.2 = kg

Example: 175 lbs / 2.2 = 79.55 kg

Inches / 39.37 = meters

Example: 72 Inches / 39.37 = 1.83 m

After you’ve done the conversions you’ll now want to assess your daily physical activity. Choose from the following options the amount of physical activity that best describes you. Keep in mind that many people overestimate their daily physical activity. If you fall somewhere in between a category you can figure out your own physical activity (PA) factor.

For example: If you feel that you are somewhere between moderate activity (1.25) and high activity(1.48), then you could add the two factors together and divide by two to get 1.365 as your PA factor.

No Activity: PA Factor Men 1.0, Women 1.0

No physical activity. You sit at work all day then you come home and sit until it’s time for bed.

Low Activity: PA Factor Men 1.11, Women 1.12

30-60 Minutes of light to moderate activity. You have to move around at work or you do tasks at home.

Moderate Activity: PA Factor Men 1.25, Women 1.27

More than 60 minutes of moderate activity. Your job requires you to be on the move for most of the day, very little sitting around.

High Activity: PA Factor Men 1.48, Women 1.45

More than 60 minutes of moderate activity plus you do 60 minutes of vigorous exercise.

Now that you have your converted height and weight, and your PA

factor, plug these values into the appropriate equation.

Men

EER = [662 - (9.53 X Age)] + PA X [(15.91 X weight in kg) + (539.6 X height in meters)]

Example:

- A male age 32

- Height 6′2 = 1.88 meters

- Weight 200 lb = 90.9 kg

- PA 1.25

EER = [662 - (9.53 X 32)] + 1.25 X [(15.91 X 90.0) + (539.6 X 1.88)]

*Parentheses first*

EER = [662 - 304.96] + 1.25 X [1,431.9 + 1014.45]

*brackets next*

EER = 357.04 + 1.25 X 2,446.35

*Multiply next*

EER = 357.04 + 3,057.94

EER = 3,415 calories

*+- 200 calories*

Women

EER = [354 - (6.91 X Age)] + PA X [(9.36 X weight in kg) + (726 X height in meters)]

Example:

- A female age 32

- Height 5′4 = 1.62meters

- Weight 140 lb = 63.63 kg

- PA 1.25

EER = [354 - (6.91 X 32)] + 1.25 X [(9.36 X 63.63) + (726 X 1.62)]

*Parentheses first*

EER = [354 - 221.12] + 1.25 X [595.58 + 1176.12]

*brackets next*

EER = 132.88 + 1.25 X 1,771.7

*Multiply next*

EER = 132.88 + 2,214.63

EER = 2,348 calories

*+- 200 calories*

Now that you have figured out your EER it’s up to you to decide whether you want to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain your current weight. To lose about a pound a week eat approximately 500 calories less than your EER every day. A negative energy balance of 1000 calories should result in a loss of 2lbs a week. That is why it so widely recommended that you only try to lose 1-2 pounds a week. A deficit of more than 1000 calories can be unhealthy and even dangerous for some people. Never eat less than 1,200 calories unless advised by your doctor and even then I’d be skeptical.

To gain weight do the opposite, but realize that if most of your weight will likely be in the form of fat. If you are looking to maintain your current weight try to adjust your diet so you’re eating as close to your EER as possible. As your weight and age change remember to recalculate your EER. This should give you a great start to developing a successful plan of attack.

Good luck with your fitness goals!

Pennsylvania Scholarships

Filed under: Uncategorized

Financial Help at Hand

A student can access Pennsylvania Financial Aid through different sources. The most trusted are loans and grants by the United States Government, the Pennsylvania State Government, colleges and universities situated in the state and other private institutions and foundations. While grants are offered without a payback expectation, loans are provided both at high and low interest rates.

Federal Student Aid

Pennsylvania Scholarships offered by the Federal Government usually come either in the form of partial aid or complete aid. Loans, for instance, are a part of the partial aid-giving system where the student does have to pay back the money. But the advantage with federal student loans is that they can be repaid at amazingly low rates of interest.

As far as federal grants go, the Government foregoes the given amount and the student is not required to pay back. Whether it is a grant or a loan, any student applying for federal aid has to make a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The criteria upon which a student finally qualifies for federal assistance differ from case to case. FAFSA has yearly application submission deadlines. For 2010, applications need to be submitted by June 30 for the 2009-2010 academic year and September 21 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Other Student Scholarships

The next best thing to taking Federal financial assistance is to approach Pennsylvania Financial Aid through support at the State Government level. In Pennsylvania, the Government has come up with a number of scholarship plans to offer financial aid to students. The Pennsylvania State Grant Program, the Pennsylvania National Guard Assistance Program and the Agriculture Education Loan Forgiveness Program are some scholarships started by the State Government to assist needy students.

If not for financial assistance from the National or State Government, the student could also bank upon scholarships initiated by not-for-profit groups and foundations. Pennsylvania Scholarships of this nature include programs like the Clarence Shock Foundation Scholarship Program and a host of programs from foundations like the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers.

The Dead Milkmen - Punk Rock Girl

Filed under: Uncategorized

The Dead Milkmen is a satirical punk band formed in 1983 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The band initially consisted of Joe Genaro (”Joe Jack Talcum”; guitar, vocals), Dave Schulthise (”Dave Blood”; bass), Dean Sabatino (”Dean Clean”; drums), and Rodney Linderman (”Rodney Anonymous”; vocals, synth). In 1988 came Beelzebubba, which featured what would become the Dead Milkmen’s biggest commercial hit and best-known song, “Punk Rock Girl.” The song’s video won rotation on MTV, and was later featured on mtv’s Beavis and Butt-head show. This album was somewhat more sophisticated, technically and musically, than previous work and featured two music videos, “Punk Rock Girl” and “Smokin’ Banana Peels”. Following in this vein is 1990’s Metaphysical Graffiti, which was even more technical than the last album, but didn’t receive the same attention as Beezlebubba did. The album featured the song “Methodist Coloring Book”; the song and its music video received little rotation. Up to this point, the band had been recording for Enigma Records and its subsidiary Restless Records. They signed with Hollywood Records, owned by Disney. Their next two albums, Soul Rotation (1992) and Not Richard, But Dick (1993), saw the further polishing of their production. However, many fans felt the band had lost its humor and vitality in an attempt to be more mainstream.

from the second round of the 6th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in November 17, 2006 Born in Rochester in 1990, New York, the pianist Claire Huangci astonishes all who hear her perform. Coming from a family of scientists, Claire received a grand piano for her 6th year birthday present. After exploring the instrument herself in the first year, she was enrolled into Settlement Music School of Philadelphia when she was 7. And in the same year, she was featured on FOX news as a child prodigy with “the skills of a professional pianist.” From 1997-1999, Claire studied with Ursula Ingolfsson at Settlement Music School, where she was awarded with a number of scholarships and won many competitions, including the Grand Prize at 1999 World Piano Competition (young artist division). As a result of her victory, she performed in the gala concert with the World Festival Orchestra in Cincinnati Ohio, and performed a winner’s concert in Carnegie Hall. In 2000, Claire became a student of Eleanor Sokoloff, a piano professor of the Curtis Institute of Music. In 2003, she was formally accepted by the Curtis Institute with a full scholarship of the Hirsig Family Foundation and continued her piano study under Eleanor Sokoloff and Gary Graffman. Benefits Of The PA 529 Plan

Filed under: Uncategorized

The 529 plan of the state of Pennsylvania, known as the College Savings program, is often touted as the best 529 plan in the country, and not without reason. This plan has several advantages for the both the discerning investor looking for tax deductions, as well as the concerned parent making long term plans for his or her child’s college education.

The following are some points which set the PA 529 plan apart from the rest of the 529 state plans:-

1. All contributions on the College Savings Plan of Pennsylvania State are partly deductible. If the contributor is filing singly, then the limit on the deductions is up to $10,000; and this amount remains same for married couples filing jointly.

2. A huge maximum contribution is allowable in the state of Pennsylvania, and that is $344,000. This money can be withdrawn for both qualified and nonqualified purposes. Withdrawals for qualified purposes at any point of time attract no penalties. But, the earnings can also be removed for a nonqualified purpose. In that case, a penalty of 10% is imposed on the amount that is removed.

3. The costs of getting into the plan are very less. There is no enrollment fee, and there is no annual maintenance fee for keeping up with this plan. There is a very small program management fee, which varies between $0.5 and $0.7.

4. This plan is an outstate favorite, because outstate residents can contribute into the plan and enjoy the same benefits as the instate residents. Qualified withdrawals from other state 529 plans into the PA 529 plan are exempt from taxes.

5. There is no broker required for buying the PA 529 plan. Residents can buy the plan directly.

6. The minimum amount to open an account is $25 for both instate and outstate residents, which is lower than the minimum amount with other states. In addition, a $25 purchase needs to be made when opening the account.

7. There is an automatic investment plan provided with the PA 529 plan, and there is no restriction on how often you contribute to the automatic investment plan. The automatic investment plan also needs a minimum additional purchase of $25.

On observing all these points, it is obvious that the college investment plan of Pennsylvania is very welcoming to people from other states. It is a very cheap and profitable investment plan, which is also very good for the instate residents.

Auto Accidents In Pennsylvania - UM/UIM Litigation

Filed under: Uncategorized

Um/Uim Litigation In Pennsylvania — The Game Has Changed

Traditionally in Pennsylvania, uninsured and underinsured motorist cases were privately arbitrated. Automobile insurance policies had provisions stating that these types of claims would be arbitrated rather than litigated through the Court system. Typically, the plaintiff would select one arbitrator. The insurance company would select one arbitrator. Those two arbitrators would then select a third or “neutral” arbitrator. The case would be tried in a far less formal fashion than a full blown jury trial. For example, medical records, police reports, expert reports, etc. would be submitted to the arbitrators, without the need to call the doctors, experts, witnesses, etc. to testify live. The decision of the arbitration panel would be binding — i.e., not appealable (except in very rare circumstances). A case that would take several days to try in a courtroom in front of a jury, and which would cost each party several thousand dollars to litigate, could be arbitrated in an afternoon for a fraction of the cost. This procedure was so beneficial to consumers, that the Pennsylvania Insurance Department made the arbitration provisions mandatory in Pennsylvania automobile insurance policies.

Then, in 2005, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the Insurance Department did not have the authority to mandate arbitration in UM/UIM cases. The Court held that it was no longer mandatory under Pennsylvania law that UM/UIM cases be submitted for binding arbitration.

Therefore, insurance companies now had the option of now resolving UIM/UIM cases in arbitration. Insurance companies began writing their insurance policies in several ways: (1) mandating arbitration just like previously; (2) allowing arbitration if either party requested it; (3) allowing arbitration if both sides agree to it; or (4) allowing arbitration if it, the carrier, requested.

It has since become increasingly routine for UM/UIM cases to be filed in the Courts of Pennsylvania. Under the Rules of Civil Procedure, civil cases arising out of motor vehicle accidents can be brought in the county: (1) where the accident occurred, (2) in the county where any defendant can be served, or (3) in the county where any corporate defendant regularly conducts business. Venue which is proper as to any one defendant is proper as to all defendants.

In the context of a UM or UIM case, the addition of the insurance company as a potential defendant in the lawsuit arising out of a motor vehicle accident has increased the venue options for plaintiffs in many cases. Most insurance companies that write automobile insurance coverage in Pennsylvania regularly do business in many counties throughout the Commonwealth. Under the Rules of Civil Procedure, those insurance companies can be sued in any county in which they regularly conduct business.

The insurance companies have responded to this seemingly unanticipated aspect of their unilateral elimination of mandatory binding arbitration by including “forum selection clauses” in their insurance policies. A forum selection clause is a policy provision which states that if a dispute arises between the insured and the carrier in respect to a UM or UIM case, the case can be litigated only in a particular county. These clauses often reduce the number of viable venues provided under the Pennsylvania Rules of Civil Procedure.

The validity and enforceability of these forum selection clauses in the context of UM/UIM cases was recently addressed by the Pennsylvania Superior Court in the case of O’Hara v. First Liberty Insurance Corporation. In that case, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania ruled that a form selection clause in the insurance policy which required all UM/UIM cases to be brought in the county and state of the “legal domicile” — where the insured lives — of the insured at the time of the accident was valid and enforceable.

This latest opinion is yet another example of the Courts in Pennsylvania making decisions which make it more difficult and more expensive for the innocent victims of motor vehicle accidents to litigate their cases.
